Weather & Climate

Those who think of Maine as a cold and dreary place couldn't be farther from the truth.

Like many of the states in the Northeast, Maine has five seasons - Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, and Mud. But really, it is the ever-changing seasons that are the appeal of Maine weather.

Here are some facts about Maine weather

• Maine has one of the most comfortable summer climates in the United States. Temperatures average in the 70's, and the scorching 90's are rare.

• Winters are cold, but not for long periods. Cold snaps of below zero weather are not prolonged. The coldest weather occurs in the Nothern Interior, where the highest mountains are.

• Different parts of Maine have distinct climates. Along the coast, the temperatures are tempered by the ocean , which makes for a different weather pattern than inland.

• Snowiest month is January

• Tornadoes are rare (and so are earthquakes!)

• Number of thunderstorms a year: 15

• Yearly precipitation: 40-46 inches

• Yearly snowfall: 50-70 Coastal, 60-90 Southern Interior, and 90-110 Northern Interior.

• Number of days a year that receive more than one inch of snow a day: 15-20 Coastal, 30 Northern Interior. Along the coast, you do have to be prepared for the "Noreaster" which can dump ten or more inches in a single day. Time to make a snowman!
