Life is rich and full at the Thornton Oaks retirement community in Brunswick, Maine, a coastal community only 30 minutes north of Portland.
Thornton Oaks retirement community continues to draw residents from throughout the United States. These residents are attracted to living in Brunswick, home of Bowdoin College where residents may audit courses, enjoy the Running Start Fitness class and enjoy the college pool as amenities of Thornton Oaks.
In addition, Brunswick is home of the world renowned Bowdoin International, Music Festival, the Maine State Music Theater, the Walker Art Museuml the McMillan-Peary Arctic museum, and the home, now a museum, of Civil War Hero Joshua Chamberlain. The Mid Coast Symphony Orchestra is nearby and Thornton Oaks residents continue to be involved as orchestra members.
The Mid Coast Senior College offers classes and Thornton Oaks hosts a class each semester. Additionally, residents at Thornton Oaks enjoy an incredible array of activities, many initiated by residents and facilitated by staff: Foreign Affairs discussion, which has attracted such guests as the current President of Liberia; reporter and author for the British Broadcasting System; Diver John Chatterton, subject of the book Shadow Divers; Curator of the National Portrait Gallery; and the list goes on. Most of these speakers visit us as a result of their affiliations with residents.
Among resident interests are book discussion groups, an Art Committee which brings eight shows a year to Thornton Oaks; a Library Committee which oversees a fine resident library; art classes, bridge, scrabble, flower arranging, and the list continues, depending on interests of the current residents.
Money Magazine selected Brunswick as one of the top five places to retire in the United States in the November 2005 issue.
