Blaine

Blaine is a town in Aroostook County, incorporated on February 10, 1874 from the former Alva Plantation, which itself was organized on April 21, 1862. The town was named for Maine politician James G. Blaine. Bucking the recent trend for Aroostook County towns to lose population, Blaine actually gained residents between 1990 and 2000. Situated in the heart of potato country, between Bridgewater and Mars Hill on Route 1, the town's eastern boundary is shared with Canada. Once a stage coach stop on the Houlton to Presque Isle route, it shares a Main Street, also Route 1, with nearby Mars Hill. From Maine: An Encyclopedia (www.themaineencyclopedia.com)
