Cape Elizabeth

Cape Elizabeth, a town in Cumberland County, incorporated on November 1, 1765 as a District from a portion of ancient Falmouth, most of which became Portland in 1786. On August 23, 1775 it was incorporated as a town. On March 15, 1895 to town was split, a portion forming South Portland and the remainder retaining the name Cape Elizabeth. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1630's and shared the difficulties of frontier life and Indian raids as did the surrounding ancient Falmouth area. Currently a wealthy suburb of Portland, the town has a scenic coastline and a series of attractions including Two Lights State Park, Crescent Beach State Park, Fort Williams, and Portland Head Light.
