Smithfield

A small friendly community with a population of 930, located between North Pond and East Pond making a great vacation spot. Smithfield was incorporated on February 29, 1840, making it the only Town in Maine to be founded on Leap Year Day! The town was made up of part of Mercer, all of East Pond Plantation and part of Dearborn. On incorporation there were 130 families living in town. The Abenakis used this area for their hunting and fishing grounds. It remains a good hunting and fishing spot as well as boating and swimming in the summer and ice fishing in the winter.
